StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

August 2, 2010 |13:04 | New Games  By : Team X

Earlier this week, London's gaming elite were treated to the midnight launch of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, the latest venture from World of Warcraft developers – and social-life obliterators – Blizzard Entertainment. After an extended hiatus from the StarCraft series, unsurprising given Blizzard's reputation for slippery release dates (don't even bother asking about Diablo III), SII:

WoL picks up from its futuristic real-time strategy predecessor with the same three life-forms: the renegade human "Terrans", the intelligent psychic "Protoss" species, and the grotesque insectoid "Zerg", still battling for ascendancy in StarCraft's far-off galaxy.

For the uninitiated, starting the series from scratch would provide useful context, but mercifully (given the magnitude of the task) this is largely unnecessary as the sequel offers a gentle learning curve and introduction to the story. SII:WoL's innovations are mostly seen in its presentation, with movie-quality cut scenes and smooth in-game rendering; however the most significant change is in the Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) element. Be warned though:

Game consoles aren't the future

July 16, 2010 |12:30 | Games Consoles  By : Team X

BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk had some rather interesting things to say this week about the future of the gaming business. Zeschuk, whose company has created major console hits like Mass Effect 2, said that going forward, the video game industry won't rely so heavily on the console market. In fact, he believes consoles could be a relic of the past as more players turn to portable devices to get their game on.

Game consoles arent the future.

"The future isn't necessarily on console," Zeschuk said at the Develop Conference, an event for European game developers. "That's the past. It's going to be a strong thing going forward, but the future is in all of these new businesses that are starting up."

Dragon Age II's Hawke is customizable, can be female

July 14, 2010 |12:52 | New Games  By : Team X

Following our announcement of Dragon Age II with details on lead character Hawke, you were worried character customization options would be absent. Thankfully, this is not the case and as suspected, BioWare is mashing the two systems of their flagship RPG series' Mass Effect  and Dragon Age together.

The new system does put you into a pre-determined role, even eliminating your ability to choose race (Hawke is human), however you can still choose a class and customize him...or her. Not sure Hawke is such a great name for a lady, but we digress.

If you're strictly a single-player mode lover on "BioShock 2" and felt a bit left out when the "Sinclair Solutions Tester Pack" and "Rapture Metro Pack" hit, 2K sent out some info that you're sure to appreciate today. A new pack of DLC called "Protector Trials" will introduce some brand new one-player challenges "starting on August 3" for the Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3.

"The team at 2K Marin has been working hard ever since the launch of 'BioShock 2' to develop ways for gamers to extend their time in the single-player world of Rapture," 2K president Christoph Hartmann, said in a press release. "I'm proud to announce the first of these experiences, the Protector Trials, which takes players back to some of their favorite places from the original game and features some of the biggest challenges that fans of this series have ever experienced."

The announcement doesn't say if the system-by-system releases will be staggered, but it does state that "Protector Trials" will run 400 Microsoft points or $4.99 on the PS3. Putting down your money will net you six new maps, new unlockables and seven new Achievements and Trophies. Moreover, 2K says they plan on making more DLC along these lines in the future. "This is just the beginning," Hartmann said. "More single-player content is on the way that will deliver more of the intense action and story-driven gameplay that fans have been craving."
