September 4, 2010 |23:16 | Games Consoles  By : Team X

Would it be sad to admit I was excited when our Move feature was pimped on the official True Blood twitter account? If so, chain me to the sad pole, because that was awesome. We went toe-to-toe with Sony's PlayStation Move for a week, and liked what we saw. Microsoft announced the price for Xbox Live was going less than the price of a cup of coffee a month, and the rage was intense.

There will also be a new official Xbox 360 controller, but right now we don't know if it will be better... or just different. This is what gamers were talking about this week.

Game consoles aren't the future

July 16, 2010 |12:30 | Games Consoles  By : Team X

BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk had some rather interesting things to say this week about the future of the gaming business. Zeschuk, whose company has created major console hits like Mass Effect 2, said that going forward, the video game industry won't rely so heavily on the console market. In fact, he believes consoles could be a relic of the past as more players turn to portable devices to get their game on.

Game consoles arent the future.

"The future isn't necessarily on console," Zeschuk said at the Develop Conference, an event for European game developers. "That's the past. It's going to be a strong thing going forward, but the future is in all of these new businesses that are starting up."

Google Chrome Could Be Your Next Game Console

May 21, 2010 |15:31 | Games Consoles  By : Team X

Along with announcing the company’s latest plans to own and be everything to all users as Mark talked about earlier today, we now have video of the presentation detailing Google’s plans for gaming on the app store and a little more information about the Unity Engine technology they’re banking on.Google is working hand in hand with Unity to make the tool a key part of their strategy. LEGO Star Wars: The Quest for R2-D2 is a professional looking game in a fully 3D environment with modeled characters and physics. While the demo game was visually pretty simple, there is potential for a next-generation quality browser game. Unlike phones with limited memory and weak graphics chips, the Unity applications can leverage PC hardware to deliver better visual experiences.

Alienware's unique new PC designs

September 25, 2009 |17:14 | Games Consoles  By : Team X

Early on in the history of Apple and home computing, Steve Jobs famously decreed that the company should not support games; he felt they would only be taken seriously if the computer was viewed as a tool and not a toy. This misstep, of course, allowed the PC to gain ridiculous amounts of marketshare, as computer games proved more popular than anyone would have guessed.

Alienware's unique new PC designs

Apple has spent the decades since catching up on marketshare--and leading in design, as more and more computer manufacturers emulate Apple's simple, minimalist lines. Ironically, while most manufacturers are copying Apple, it is a company specializing in gaming PCs, Alienware, that seems to be the sole manufacturer trying to make computers that stand out rather than fit in. Yesterday at the Tokyo Game Show 2009, Alienware took the wraps off their new line of PCs and accessories, and true to their name, none of these designs could be mistaken for anyone else's.

New Gaming Console On Its Way

September 17, 2009 |12:25 | Games Consoles  By : Team X

Startup company MechaWorks has been developing a new gaming console in stealth mode over the past two years. Code-named Full Circle, the console is being introduced at GDC to give developers a first look at the platform.

Taking a new approach to gaming consoles, the platform eschews both streaming and subscription-based platforms, in favor of a more traditional approach to cloud-based console gaming. Full Circle combines revolutionary software for Mac and PC, with what the company touts as the most powerful hardware console built to-date. For the first time, cutting-edge games will be able to be played across Mac and PC, as well as the Full Circle Console.

Happy 10th anniversary, Sega Dreamcast!

September 9, 2009 |13:34 | Games Consoles  By : Team X

There's a lot to keep track of on September 9, with an Apple press conference and the release of The Beatles: Rock Band game. But we'd be remiss if we didn't call attention to the upcoming 10th anniversary of one of the best-loved game consoles of all time. It was 10 years ago tomorrow (September 9, 1999) that Sega released the Dreamcast in North America. Remembered primarily by video game history buffs now, this unassuming white box helped introduce some mainstays of the modern game console--even though the Dreamcast itself had a very short lifespan.

Happy 10th anniversary, Sega Dreamcast!

This was the first game system to include a standard built-in 56K modem (this was pre-broadband for most people). It wasn't widely taken advantage of, but some early games, such as the amusing Chu Chu Rocket, proved that multiplayer gaming could work in the living room. More traditional games such as Quake III Arena and Phantasy Star Online also made use of the Dreamcast modem. All but forgotten now, a Dreamcast Web browser was also available.

Unfortunately for Sega, the $199 Dreamcast would prove to be the end of the line for the company as a console maker. The storied lineage of the Sega Master System, Genesis, and Saturn hit a wall as the Dreamcast was quickly overshadowed by the Sony PlayStation 2. The system was discontinued in 2001.
